Tonto Trail

Hance Rapids

Horseshoe Mesa
Horseshoe Mesa is a popular day hike destination along the Grandview Trail. From the mesa top there are some fantastic views looking back up towards the rim and from the northern end of the mesa there are some equally good views of the Tonto Platform, the inner gorge and even some places from where you can glimpse the Colorado River.

There are also many abandoned mine entrances, mining ruins and a number of artifacts dating back to when copper was mined beneath the mesa. The mine entrances have been closed for a reason: the timbers which support the walls and ceilins are decaying and it is dangerous to be inside. Please do not try to gain entry to the mine. If you really want to explore underground check out the Cave of the Domes.

There is also a campground located on the mesa and a Backcountry Permit is required to camp here.
