I am not sure what time I was up but I know it was already light when I did finally crawl out of the sleeping bag. Everyone else was up shortly thereafter. We lingered over breakfast and then packed up camp and put all of the stuff we did not need for our day hike into a big pile on the tarp and then rolled it up. It looked like a big blue burrito sitting there at camp when we left.

The hike down along Nankoweap Creek to the river was very pleasant. We had shade for the first hour or so as the sun had not yet crested the canyon walls. I ended up wearing my Croc-like knock-offs as I knew there would be lots of creek crossings and with the water running so high I really did not want to end up getting my boots wet. John ended up going in his tevas but Max and Janice wore their boots. There we lots of creek crossings and a few of them were a little tricky. In between there was lots of room for hiking along the creek though.

We left camp at 700 and we were down at the river around 900. There were lots of flowers blooming down along Nankoweap delta, along the river and all the way up to the granary. Most it was the golden flowers of the brittlebush and they were just everywhere. It was like a blanket of gold had been draped over everything. So pretty! There were many other flowers mixed in but the predominant color was gold.

It took us about 45 minutes up climb over to the trail that lead up to the granary and then climb that to the top. There was a river trip at the granary when we started our climb but they left before we got there and we had it to ourselves. There was still a little bit of sun hitting the northern edge of the granary when we arrived but most of it was in shade already. We ended up staying up there for a little more than a half of an hour. We watched the people from the river trip hike back down to their rafts and then take off down the river.

Another river trip pulled into the beach just as we were heading down and I went over to talk to them. My cousin John wanted to go for a swim in the river anyway. One of the guys on the river trip asked if we had everything we needed which was just what I was hoping for. I said "no" and he asked when we needed. All I said was "beer!" They gave us each a can of cold brew which really was just perfect. We all ended up going for a swim in the icy Colorado River.

We got a late start that day and lingered longer at the river than I had originally planned so it was late by the time we got back to camp. We had lunch there and then packed up our gear and headed up Nankoweap Creek a few miles to be closer to the Kolb Natural Bridge for the following day's day hike. There had been a large fire in the area recently and we ended up walking through a huge burned out area. That saved us a little time though as hiking along the brush next to the fast flowing creek was time consuming. It was already sunset when we arrived at camp and we ended up cooking and eating with our headlamps on.
