Thursday, May 5, 2011 - 7:30pm : Surprise Valley Camp

Today was a relatively easy day. We left camp a little after 7:00 and took a couple of short breaks going across Surprise Valley and got to the Tapeats Canyon rim on the east side around 11:00. We also stopped at Deer Spring on the way to resupply with water.

We found a couple of nice campsites right on the rim and stashed what gear and food we did not need for the day and took the rest down to Thunder River.

The flow rate of Thunder River was incredible and I have never seen so much water coming out of the caves there. Robert and Mary claimed to have seen more at one time but they have been here a lot more often than I have. It was beautiful.

We rested for a while at Thunder River and then John, Janice and I hiked down to the confluence with Tapeats Creek. Tapeats Creek was flowing very high as well and after the confluence the flow was just awesome. We also went down to visit the Upper Tapeats campground as long as we were so close. It felt very warm down along Tapeats Creek, probably in the low 90s.

We went back up to Thunder River and rested a while longer and then we had dinner. I joked and told Janice it was her turn to "cook" dinner but she jumped right up and took over. We had rehydrated beef and broccoli and there isn’t any real cooking involved but it was still very much appreciated.

After dinner we filled up all of our water containers from Thunder River and then went back up to our camp in Surprise Valley.

At camp we discovered that John and Janice's food had been raided by a critter or critters. It had been hung from a tree but something got into it. John only lost a few items but Janice lost pretty much everything except for a few pieces of hard candy. The site was littered with the remains of the raid and we picked it all up and returned to camp. Janice didn't have that much food lost---just breakfast and lunch for tomorrow. We all have extra food anyway so it will not be a problem.
