Driving directions to Swamp Point

• From Jacob Lake go south on Arizona state highway 67 for approximately 26 miles.

• Take a right turn (west) onto Forest Service (FS) road #22, just past DeMotte Park and Kaibab Lodge.

• Follow FS 22 for approximately one mile, to the top of the ridge.

• Take a sharp, left-hand turn (south) onto FS 270.

• Follow FS 270 for approximately 2.2 miles.

  Note: After about a mile you will see a road marker with an arrow indicating that the road is going to veer off to the right. This is FS 222, not FS 270, and to remain on FS 270 you should continue straight.

• Turn right (west) and follow FS 223 for approximately 5.8 miles to FS 268.

  Note: FS 268 is not marked.

• Drive approximately 0.25 miles to FS 268B (bears left at fork).

  Note: FS 268B is also not marked. Be careful, the roads are a bit confusing in this area. I found 268A, 268L and 268D BEFORE I found 268B, which was completely by accident. If you continue on FS 268 it will become FS 268A, which will take you out to Fire Point, not Swamp Point.

• Once on 268B, follow it approximately 0.7 miles to the Park Boundary.

  Note: At the Park Boundary you will see a sign that says "END 268B", with the "B" barely distinguishable. This was the only indication to me that I was on the correct road.

• If you are driving to Swamp Point, follow Swamp Ridge Road for 7.8 miles to the parking area at the trailhead.

• If you are walking to Swamp Point, there are numerous good places to park along the road.

Additional notes

• Once inside the National Park, all bets are off as far as road conditions. Aside from not being well marked, the Forest Service (FS) roads outside the park are well graded and generally in very good condition. This is because the government makes money off of these roads (probably only a buck or two per tree but money is money, right?) and must keep them open and accessible to logging trucks. As soon as you enter NPS land the roads go to crap very quickly. Ask again where the money from your Backcountry Permit is going?

• Roads may be closed at any time for prescribed burns.
