"The Canyon Trip Promised to Jennifer Huggins"

[ Intro | Day1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 ]

Jennifer Huggins Jennifer is a pretty, intelligent, mature, athletic and hard working 12 year old, who looks and behaves more like an 18 year old. It is always fun to have her around. Bill and I have been looking forward to taking her to the Canyon.

INTRODUCTION

(Here) "... lies Magic Valley with its muted charms
The valley does not speak of what it knows
except to us who shared its happiness.
It recognizes me as one of those,
and rids a lonely heart of emptiness.

The years have taught that pleasures pass away,
but pasted in the heart they linger on,
and during melancholy moments to our heart they play
the old nostalgic song of pleasures gone.

Although the valley is with heartache fraught
its peace a refuge in my heart has wrought"

From "Magic Valley," by James V Davis, who has graciously given me permission to use his poem.

Substitute "canyon" for "valley," and you will know a little of what I felt on that sunny August Sunday when our group met at Lees Ferry to board our rafts for the 5 day trip down to Bright Angel Creek

Five years ago we had made the same trip with Dories. That one had been promised to Jennifer's older brother, Matthew, and the report of that trip can be found on in Bob Ribokas excellent website here:

http://www.kaibab.org/gc/bg97/bg9701.htm

A lot has changed since our Dories trip of August 1997. Most wrenching, Peggy, my wife of nearly 47 years, died suddenly and unexpectedly on December 5, 1999. Additionally I have had a worsening of my dizziness, have had a TIA requiring therapy with the blood thinner, coumadin, and I have had my left hip replaced.

This may be my last camping trip in the Grand Canyon, and it saddens me; however, I have many pleasant memories, thus:

"The years have taught that pleasures pass away, but pasted in the heart they linger on, and during melancholy moments to our heart they play the old nostalgic song of pleasures gone.

Although the (canyon) is with heartache fraught its peace a refuge in my heart has wrought"
